The Reason Dr. Jay Became a Chiropractor Might Be the Same Reason You Are Here

Dr. Frank Jay Lagoni developed a herniated disc that caused shooting pain down his right leg so severe he could not sit through a class. He was pulled out of school entirely. Doctors ran MRIs, tried physical therapy, and focused on his knee and hip before finally identifying the real problem: a compressed disc in his spine causing classic sciatica.

The recommended solution was a full laminectomy and discectomy. Major spinal surgery on a kid in his early teens.

His parents said no. They took him to a chiropractor instead. Then another. Then a third, Dr. Hulin, who got the result. With chiropractic and a lot of prayer, the pain resolved. Dr. Jay went back to school, went back to the mat, and kept wrestling all the way through college, seeing a chiropractor throughout to keep his spine healthy and his body in the game.

Looking back, he believes a laminectomy in the 1990s would have led to more pain and likely more surgeries down the road. That is not a knock on surgery. It is a straightforward assessment from someone who has spent nearly 20 years studying spines, treating patients, and watching outcomes.

That experience is why he became a chiropractor. And it is why, when a patient comes in with shooting leg pain, a disc injury, or a diagnosis that has surgery somewhere in the conversation, he does not just understand the clinical picture. He has lived it.

Education and Training

Dr. Jay earned his Bachelor of Science from Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania in 2001, then went on to earn his Doctor of Chiropractic from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa in 2005. Palmer is the founding institution of chiropractic education, established in 1897 and still widely regarded as the most respected chiropractic college in the world.

He is licensed in the state of Indiana and has been in continuous practice in Pendleton since shortly after graduating.

His clinical training includes Gonstead, Diversified, and Thompson techniques for manual adjusting, along with Arthrostim instrument adjusting for patients who prefer or require a gentler approach.

He has additional training in functional medicine and incorporates nutritional and lifestyle guidance into patient care without pushing supplements or add-on products.

How Dr. Jay Practices

The first thing new patients notice is that nobody rushes them.

Every new patient receives a detailed health history and physical evaluation before any treatment begins. Dr. Jay wants to understand not just where it hurts, but why: what you do for work, how you move, what you have already tried, and what your goals are. If imaging is needed, the office has a fully functional digital X-ray unit on site. Films are sent to a radiologist for a professional second opinion before Dr. Jay discusses findings with you.

If X-rays are taken, the first adjustment typically happens at the second visit, the Report of Findings. That appointment is where Dr. Jay walks through the diagnosis and prognosis in plain language, reviews a home exercise program specific to your condition, and outlines a recommended care plan with a clear picture of expected outcomes. You leave knowing exactly what is going on and what comes next.

Care plans are designed around your needs. Dr. Jay tracks your progress throughout to make sure you are getting the results you came for, and adjusts the approach if needed. There is no prepay and no pressure to commit to more than makes sense for your situation.

He coordinates care with other providers on a regular basis and has working relationships with stand-alone MRI facilities when advanced imaging is needed at a reasonable cost. The goal is always to get the patient the right outcome, not to keep them in the office longer than necessary.
