Tech neck is not a formal medical diagnosis but it describes a very real and increasingly common clinical presentation. It refers to the neck pain, stiffness, headaches, and postural changes that develop from prolonged forward head posture during screen use, whether that screen is a phone, a tablet, a laptop, or a desktop monitor. It is showing up in patients of all ages, from teenagers spending hours on their phones to adults working long days at a desk, and it is producing a level of cervical spine stress that the human body was not designed to sustain.

The mechanics are straightforward. The average adult head weighs between ten and twelve pounds in a neutral position. For every inch the head moves forward from that neutral position the effective load on the cervical spine increases dramatically. At a typical forward head posture during phone use the load on the neck can reach forty to sixty pounds of effective force. Sustained over hours each day, that load accelerates degenerative changes in the cervical discs and joints, produces chronic muscle tension and spasm in the posterior neck and upper back, and alters the natural curve of the cervical spine over time.

Left unaddressed, tech neck progresses from occasional stiffness and soreness to chronic neck pain, frequent headaches, and in more advanced cases cervical disc changes and radiculopathy with symptoms that radiate into the shoulder and arm. The earlier the postural pattern is identified and corrected, the better the long-term outcome.

At Lagoni Chiropractic, tech neck is evaluated as both a structural and a behavioral problem.

The structural component involves restricted joint motion in the cervical and upper thoracic spine, muscle imbalance between the overworked posterior neck muscles and the weakened deep cervical flexors, and in some cases early disc changes visible on X-ray. The behavioral component involves the habits and ergonomic patterns that created the problem and will recreate it if they are not addressed alongside the structural treatment.

Treatment may include chiropractic adjustments to the cervical and upper thoracic spine to restore normal motion and reduce joint stress, Arthrostim instrument adjusting, soft tissue work to the posterior neck and upper trapezius musculature, low-level laser therapy, electric muscle stimulation, kinesiotaping for postural cueing and muscle support, and a home exercise program targeting cervical curve restoration, deep neck flexor strengthening, and scapular stability. Ergonomic guidance for workstation setup and screen habits is part of every tech neck care plan.
